Cabbage Boiled Dinner

1 head green cabbage, cut into fairly large chunks, maybe eight per head
4-8 carrots, pealed and quartered
6-10 red potatoes (can use white but peal those), cut into half or quarters
1 pound polish sausage, optional, cut into 3-4 inch lengths

Heat a large kettle with 3-4 quarts of water.  Add the carrots and potatoes, boil on low to medium heat for about 15 minutes. Then add the cabbage and sausage; cook for an additional 20-25 minutes.  When the vegetables are tender, the meal is ready. Using a slotted spoon, put a serving of each vegetable on each plate.  Mash the carrots and potatoes lightly with a fork, add butter, salt, pepper, and ketchup to any or all items as desired.
