Remember, we are a VALUE ADDED C.S.A.
LOTS OF GOODIES PLANNED. We are a value added, "cream of the crop" assortment of farm fresh foods. We are a multiple farm C.S.A., which means, in addition to what we grow on our farm we also link with several local farms and small businesses to plan what we will grow and offer in our weekly assortment. The growing methods of our linking farms are ;
" Certified Organic", which means they adhere to strict standards and are checked by the state of Md. each year. "Natural," meaning that organic methods are used but the farm is not certified and "IPM," which is, Integrated Pest Management. Everything that is grown at Breezy Willow is"Certified Organic" and we have been using sustainable practices for the past 28 years. Being good stewards of the land and raising animals the way nature intended is very important to us. Our heritage chicks are happy being raised on pasture along with our sheep, alpacas and rabbits. Our beef, pork and chicken are pasture raised and grass fed for us by 4 H small family farms.
IT TAKES MORE THAN 1 FARM TO PROVIDE FOR A COMMUNITY AND IT TAKES A COMMUNITY TO PROVIDE FOR MORE THAN 1 FARM. Also, since we link with other small farms, it limits the crop failure risk that you will find in most other C.S.A.'s. If one farm has crop failure chances are that another farm will have it. If several of our farms have crop failure at the same time, we will source products as locally as possible. Our goal is to stay within 100 miles in the state of Md. but sometimes it is necessary to go out of state to Pa. Va.etc. to still give you the value in your weekly share. Members understand that we are at the mercy of "Mother Nature".
Our program offers a wide variety of items and we offer many heirloom varieties of vegetables like the ones our grandparents grew. Foods that are grown for flavor and nutrition rather than long distance hauling. We are a value added C.S.A designed to feed a family of four.
An example of a week in June: 1 quart of strawberries, 1 pint of blueberries, 1lb. spring lettuce mix, 1lb. spinach, 3 lbs. of potatoes, 1lb. of beans, 1 bunch of spring onions, 1 lb. of asparagus, your choice of freshly baked bread from "Great Harvest" which may include our own farm fresh eggs, herbs or honey. Sweet breads and rolls will be available from "The Breadery". You will also receive a dozen eggs weekly. On the last week of every month you will receive another farm fresh goodie such as eggs, fresh fruit jam, cheese, honey, etc. on a rotating basis. Pick your own herbs are available as part of our program. You are welcome to pick from a wide variety.
What seasonal fruits and vegetables can you expect to receive?
Strawberries, cherries, blueberries, peaches, plums, nectarines, cantaloupes, melons, apples, pears, plums, tomatoes, sweet corn, beets, radishes, candy onions, assorted beans, assorted squash, potatoes, cucumbers, lettuces, spinach, swiss chard, peas, asparagus, eggplant, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. We also have a trade table so you welcome to trade 1 item per week if there is something else that would suit your family’s preference.
If you go on vacation or unable to pick up for any reason, you may have a friend or co-worker pick up for you. If no one picks up, you are still responsible for payment as it is a seasonal commitment and your food will be donated to the Howard County food bank.
Certain products are available for sale by the pound, such as our premium quality local grass fed beef, chicken, pork, and lamb. Other items available for sale include our own eggs, soaps, natural honey including our own lavender honey that is infused with our organically grown lavender. New for 2012 are locally crafted artisan cheeses made with cow, sheep and goats milk, locally grown and milled flours, honey mead kits and more. You may also order these items online.
